Delve into the rich history and cultural significance of Chinese dumplings, a dish with more than 1,800 years of legacy originating in the Han Dynasty, and explore its many variations throughout East Asia and beyond. There are many variations of dumplings spanning East Asia: Jiaozi in Mandarin, Mandu in Korean, Gyoza in Japanese. And of course, there are many versions of filled dumplings spanning every culture and corner of the world.  

Through sensory and critical conversations, you'll gain a deeper understanding of Asian Canadian identities and experiences and how these are interconnected to anti-Black, anti-Indigenous racism and colonialism. Engage in discussions to help you learn and understand the historical and present injustices facing Asian communities.

Meet Your Leader: Alice Te

Alice Te has been a social justice educator for over 30 years and has had the opportunity to work in many educational spaces of teaching and learning including the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario as the coordinator of Equity and Women's Services, Toronto District School Board as an elementary teacher and equity consultant, OISE/UT and York University's Faculty of Education as a course director. She is a strong advocate and practitioner of anti-oppressive education, intersectional feminism and culturally relevant pedagogy. She has recently coordinated the writing of a number of educational resources addressing anti-Asian and anti-Black racism, and often facilitates workshops on anti-oppressive education. On a personal note, Alice identifies as a cis-woman, Chinese Filipina, and has been a settler in Canada since she was 5 years old. She loves to run but does not see herself as an athlete. And she loves to cook but does not see herself as a chef!

Alice is currently the CEO and co-founder of Intersectional Inquiry Educational Consulting Inc.
